Ray I think something like that is a little over my pay grade, and experience! argel55, I wasn't trying to offend anyone on my comment about mirror polish, just a personal opinion. Name is Keith.

Well, I've been fishing longer than I've been making knives and I'm going on 52 years now at knifemaking. I've worked on commercial grouper boats, guided/worked more than a few charters, fished semi-pro bass competition, with a whole lot of pleasure sport fishing and meat fishing in between. The only custom fillet knife I have ever seen used was mine and one other by Rick Lowe. Yes, I do like using my custom fillet knife and have used it ever since I made it back in '80 something. It does outperform any commercial blade I've used. I still make fillet knives from time to time, but wouldn't depend on them to pay the bills.

Not saying you are wrong, just speaking from a few years of experience in that area. I have seen many, many of them disappear into the deep blue or murky river depths. It's what happens.

I think Rapala came out with a floater many years ago, but haven't seen one in awhile and as Ray said it was necessarily a smaller blade design. Seems floating and durability just can't get connected. Saw one that had a skeletal blade (for lightness), but it didn't work worth a darn.

Well, back to the drawing board....or CAD interface.......lol Actually, I may make a few fillet knives, but I'm not really expecting the to be a big seller. I'm really wanting to create a few survival knives. Not the kind made in China with a compass, but a comfortable blade that's about .25 thick an about 10" long made out of 5160 or something comparable.

the heavier the blade the less likely it will be carried. 3/16s might be better but that's just my opinion. Welcome to knet

I want it to be a chopper as well, but weight is a consideration......hmmm....you may be right Austin, guess I could go the way of a hatchet with the 1/4" idea. But still might go with a matching set. Smaller knife coupled to the hatchet. My name was Hurley Knives before, but I changed it to my sharpening companies name, still only been here about a week. Good to know you Austin

The trick is to make them better than the commercial knives (which are, basically, disposable) and then find a way to make the sportsman pay $200 for it because it will last a life time instead of $25 every season ...
Ray I looked at your page and those fillet knives are all awesome but this one really stands out, Custom Fillet Style 3123 - Presentation Grade!!!! Wooho That one is freakin awesome.

The trick you refer too pretty much sums up the custom knife business in general! IMHO

If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner!

Wow, Ray - great idea! Now that they have discovered micro-organisms that feed on algae and generate electricity, you might even be able to work in a flashing light!!
