A Couple of Hunters
Here's a couple of hunters I finished today. I liked them so much I thought I'd share. The one with the handle made up of ivory followed by the drops off my usual stabilized wood handles has a 4.5" blade of 52100 and a wrought iron guard. The other one has a 4.5" blade of BG-42 , an ironwood spacer, and a stabilized Sea Cow Rib handle (several thousand years old). Both are stock removal and hollow ground...

Wow those are awesome. Wish I could get mine that nice. What did you use to blacken the first blade?

Just a FeCl etch like you would do with damascus (which this isn't). For extra rust protection the blade is coated with melted carnauba wax which is why you may see what looks like scratches, bumps or scrapes but that wax is very hard and will keep the blade clean until the new owner takes delivery. The guard was allowed to rust a little to bring out whatever pattern the wrought iron might have and this piece had a pattern that is almost bird's eye, then it was oiled ....

Yes, many times. In fact, I just posted a question about that myself. Look at the thread immediately below this one on the Newbies page ... |

Bowman, the finishes are dead simple. Everything is professionally stabilized material so all I needed to do was sand to 400 grit and buff .....

Eric,
Here's a top view of the handles. BTW, the knife with the Sea Cow handle sold within 5 hours of being placed on my website ... Last edited by Ray Rogers; 11-19-2013 at 10:53 AM. |

Beautiful. The stacked handle is like a buffet for the eyes. Exactly where does one find ancient sea cow ribs? :-;

I've had that rib piece for so long I have forgotten where I got it. It's the kind of thing I sometimes find at Boone Trading though. Any place that would sell mastodon ivory or giraffe bone would also be a potential source ....
