1084 Help

Hi all,

After lots of reading and lots of questions I am in the process of making a knife , a little background I have made 1 knife out of a cold rolled steel just for practice to see if I could do it, to say the least I learned a ton!

Then I was going to use 0-1 as I have some of that coming to me from a friend but in the mean time i got my hands on a piece of 1084, so tonight out to my shop I went, had my design and took the 1084 and figured on profiling out the blade! Much to my shock i found it very hard to deal with, it appears to me that it is already hardened? My reasoning is that upon trying to drill it i couldnt drill through it, and it flat out wouldnt cut with a hack saw.

So here is my question am i missing something here, do i need to do something with it prior to cutting?? Any help would be great!!

Thanks

Ross

Sounds like it was hardened in its previous life. You'll need to anneal it to rebirth it into a blade. To do this, get a bucket of wood ash from the fireplace or the neighborhood marshmallow roast. Heat the steel to critical (non-magnetic) and bury it in the wood ash. Leave it overnight. The ash will insulate the steel, and make it cool very, very slowly. This will anneal the steel and allow you to cut and drill.

Thanks Jamey, that seemed to do the trick, I was able to cut it and profile the shape! Still was hard to cut but was able to be cut after I did that to it!!
