Lay a short 6"-8" section of 4" dia. black pipe (not galvanized) down into your coals and bury at an angle leaving one end exposed for access. Build up fire bed around pipe and let it reach a steady even heat it's full length making it an "oven" chamber that doesn't have the air-flow/hot-spots. Heat your blade to non-mag inside the pipe. You will be able to control the heating up of the blade better with a little practice.
