I think that the canvas micarta might be a little better if you want a better grip feeling, but linnen will hold even when wet. If you want a little more grip with it thenmask off the blade area and hand sand it with some 320 grti without polishing it. Not bad at all for #5.

Curtis, where does your brother inlaw guide. I live just south of olympia in washington.
As as the micarta I tried just sanding and liked the look of a light polish better. I think f it was canvas a sanded look would be nice.
I do agree with everyone I rather have a better edge then flex. I have enough dull knives around the house.
Crex and Chris the name jokes don't bother me, at my age I have almost heard everyone.
I can certainly dish it out as easy as it comes in
I wish I was a true bladesmith but I'll have to settle for what looks like a good blade and keep all of you guys fooled.
