1 millimeter
i did some searches to see how thick to leave the edge thickness on 440c before heat treat and it seems i've been doing it wrong. I've been leaving mine at 1 mm using nothing but files and sandpaper. Do ya'll think that is too thick to get a durable edge on a hunting knife?

According to me that is much to thick. After heattreating you will find that it is verry difficult to file the steel, because it becomes to hard.
I am just a beginner, but i filed my first 2 knives to a almost sharp edge. And it went verry well. After heat treating you don't have to file just grind the edge sharp will do the job. FF |

See this thread,
http://ckdforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17056 I posted something similar to this question. I ended taking the knives down to .5mm and then put the actual cutting edge on after the heat treating. The knives were basically finished except for the cutting edge and polishing when they went away. Phantom23 |
