August 28th meeting is taking shape!
Hi Knifemakers,
Carl has been working diligently on the demos for our next meeting and has put together a good slate. The meeting will be held Saturday, August 28 in Conyers Georgia at the home/shop of Wayne Hensley. Wayne is on our Board of Directors and is also a member of the National Knifemakers' Guild. As soon as I get directions from Wayne I will send those out along with a list of hotels. The Board of Directors meeting will begin at 8:30 with the General Meeting and demos beginning at 9:30 a.m. So far demos and plans for the day include (but not necessarily in this order): guard and handle demo for a stick tang knife tapering a tang on a full tang knife contoured handle demo involving youth in knifemaking (growing the future of the craft) questions and answers Iron in the Hat Lunch Iron in the Hat, for those of you who are not familiar with it, is just a fun way to pay for lunch. You bring something out of your shop that you don't want or are not using---some folks bring handle material that no longer looks good to them, steel, screws, tubing, a Bader Grinder , anything someone can use. I have been to meetings were some greeting cards were "custom designed" by one of the wives and packaged 5 to a set with envelopes and they went FAST. Also one time someone brought small fire extinguishers and someone else brought some old, small wood boxes with hinged tops. You get the idea---anything that you are not going to use but someone else might. We will sell tickets (a dollar apiece of 6 for $5). The money will be used to buy lunch. And after lunch we will start drawing tickets for you to come up and pick something out. You may get your ticket number drawn once or you may be real lucky and have it drawn many times OR not at all. But each time one of your numbers is drawn you get to pick something off the Iron in the Hat Table. And remember----the more tickets we sell, the better your chances, and the BETTER WE EAT . John and I are looking forward to getting together with you guys and ladies again. He always comes away from knife meetings encouraged and with a new idea he picked up from one of you to try. This is the heart and soul of what knife meetings should be. Each of us encouraging each other and sharing our knowledge and skill. Each of us has an important role in the success of our Guild. Those who are weekend makers and those who are career makers each have a valuable place in and contribution to our Guild. Also, if there is a specific demo you would like to see done let John John or Carl know. If you would like to contribute your talent to do a demo, let them know that also. You don't have to be an expert. Each person has their own way of doing things and your way just may be a lot easier and better than my way. Remember that your wives / husbands are invited. See you guys August 28 in Conyers! |
