Red face Asleep?

Are all us folder makers asleep?

I've been very busy with orders, but I always have time to talk with friends about custom made folders.

Somebody tell me something I don't know.

I just learned that Titanium can be magnetized. I was talking to chuck at alpha knife supply and he said they put some Ti into an electric induction furnace and it was vibrating and had a magnetic pull on it.

So I guess we'll start making magnetic knives that pull bad guy's guns from their holsters??

Whatcha been up to Ed?

Humm...I wonder if Ti can be heat treated then by making it magnetic then heating it back to non-magnetic and quenching? I believe I once heard it said that the Rc of Ti is in the 40's, a little low for a "great" blade.
Would it need tempering?
I'm starting 2 folders today using some Damascus I made last year. Both will be essentially the same except for the scales, one will have Mesquite scales, and the other Mammoth Ivory. I may throw in a touch of copper for some visual effect.
Hi Don, Texas is starting to get a little warm eh?

I hate to tell everybody, but ANY conductive material in an induction furnace will give off a magnetic signature....

And if you alternate the magnetic feild it will shoot right out the end!

A few friends and I built an alternating linear motor back in high school that would hurl an aluminum disc across the room, it would do the same with copper and anything else conductive even if it had NO iron in it at all.... Even conductive plastics.

Actually the iron would stick to the alternating feild and glow red after only a few seconds....

Remember magnetism induces, electricity, and electricity induces magnetism!

Now if we can tackle that Titanium heat treating question..

Remember? Sometimes I can't remember my own name, Alan.

Very good answer, Alan. Thanks.

I've heard of people heating Ti with a torch, but I don't believe there is any benefit.

He did tell me that they took some steel and heated JUST the edge of it and quenched it. they could hold it by the spine and not get burned. said when it came out of the quench the edge was way hard and the spine was super soft and no scale anywhere. Does give heat treatment a new angle.

As for the tempering I have no idea on that one.
