I kind of thought a flipper would be part of a BBQ set, like a fork/knife carving set! But I like a not your normal kitchen implement KITH. Try and drive to the artistic/unusual, something like the toast cutter contest.

Knife or implement KITH and I'm in.

Roc, what size stock did you use on the flipper? 3/16", 1/4", just trying to get the feel of it, one of these looks like it would be nice in a camper.

I only had one piece of it and I believe it was around 3/8" round stock. I made it kinda long, around 2'. I like your idea of making it to match a carving set.

I put together some scans of both ends that I made at at the time. It was too long to fit on the scanner. The weird looking thing in the bottom right is my first attempt at hammering out a leaf as the handle. Later I took a file and carved some veins in it.

Charlie Smalle(sp?)made a really cool one at the Scagel hammerin with a basket weave handle useing a torch to heat and bend it. Totally awesome!!!! I tried to win it in the auction, but it exceeded my budgit.

Getting the tip geometry is the tricky part. Getting it to pick up the meat easy, then release it with out fuss.

With as hot as I get my grill at times, two feet long sounds good hammerdownnow. I have singed a lot of my hair grilling. I like doing steaks over VERY high heat and than moving them off to the side. Same with roasts sear them and than move to the cool side of the grill and slow roast. Works great on my wife?s favorite, a 3" thick bone in strip steak. You don't think of it as a roast but dry brined and sliced up thin on the bias, melts like butter .

Anyone else on whether it should be a KITH or a KUITH (kitchen utensil)?

Jim

So Roc, if I get what you're saying, if I make one of these, there will need to be some testing done to ensure it works properly? Might even have to make a few and test them all to see which one works best?

Talk about hard work!

That's what I like about you Carl. You are always thinking! Jim made me hungry.

Check this out. Never bring a gun to a knife fight

Wow, that's an eye opener. When most people tell me not to take a knife to a gun fight I remind them of Bowie but this is something else.

I would share it with my co-workers but most of them are so down on police and their training that they would only point out that the gun should be out and the hammer pulled before they approached the person. They mostly fall into the shoot first asked questions later category. I'd rather not be shot by the police trying to break into my own house!!

Don't get me wrong I do believe our police are having their hands tied too much with criminals but I don't think we need Judge Dread just yet.

I can't view it.

I'll clarify; I like the idea of it being implements included, not limited to knives.

Now that the Christmas KITH is in its last parts, AlanR reminded me and so the thread won't get lost is everyone still up for this?

I was figuring starting Jan 8th. I like the idea in this on to bring a lot of pics on progress. I have never made a kitchen knife so with plenty of photos on progress this could almost be used as tutorials for a range of different knives in the future.

Still got me Jim, and I should be out of the work crunch by then, able to spend some time at the forge!

I'm seeing the light at the end of the kitchen remodeling tunnel. Count me in.
