I'm trying to come up with an idea.

I've got a good idea for this one.
Hint: I am heavily into the outdoors and hiking/hunting. This one will be able to help you survive where I spend most of my time. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? KN Auctions to help a member in need and score a GREAT deal! ?? |

Well, the perfect survival knife, is the one you have with you when the s--t hits the fan. So my definition of the knife for this is my EDC.( Except its a nessmuk, and I've already done two of those for two kiths.)
I gotta come up with a different shape...... Might use my "truck knife" idea for this as I spend a lot of time out and about in a pick-up. If its not practical to have with you, you won't have it when you need it. Just some food for thought. Good point Gary. However, the intro calls for the one you would "want" with you. This is something you can plan for. Here are a few posiible scenarios:
You've been invited to do some international work in some war-torn African nation where you are not allowed a gun... Or, you are on a two week tour of the Amazon jungle and this is your only defense... Or, you are a pirate with no sword trying to take an English frieghter... Or, you are bear-hunting when after a single shot (which only pissed off the bear) your gun is hopelessly jammed... Or, if you were planning a hiking trip through hell along the banks of the River Styx... Or, you are going house to house in Bagdad with dwindling ammo supplies... This is the ULTIMATE knife for such an occassion. Design it for whatever extremity you choose, but do so from the stand-point that you are packing for the trip, and as you look at your collection of knives, you have to pick only one. I fully understand the philosophical point you're making, and I agree. But I'll go out on a limb here and say that a basic EDC is not in step with the spirit of the KITH. Get creative brother! Engineer that baby! You live in Alaska! Make us a knife we could use to take down a bear, skin it, and quarter it. Then, I'll be wanting to have my bear steak high up on the slopes of McKinnley, so I'll need a knife that can hack out a shelter from whatever is available up there, cut the fire wood, etc, etc. This ought to be the perfect project for you! Blow us away man! __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

Have you ever been a motivational speaker Andy?? if not you should be.....
point well taken! OK, this is the, "stuff already hit the fan, and I'm wadding in" knife, not the "what I have when it hits" knife. Gotcha! I'll start somewhere close to my old edc (think crocodile dundee) Hmmmmm.......... Aha! I got an idea! Good description Andy, that is along the lines of what I was thinking. A hiking trip down the banks of the Styx, I think I have done that one once, steep slopes, hot weather, no shade, right?
Gary, I agree, I am trying to design something that when a person would leave to go into the back woods elk hunting, he would want to put in his pack, knowing full well it would serve him in times of good (just put a sticker in a 7-point bull) and bad (just put a sticker in a grizzly and has a couple minutes of pissed off grizzly before it dies ). Anyway, this sounds like fun. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? KN Auctions to help a member in need and score a GREAT deal! ?? |

Andrew,
I havn't done one of these before. I've been contemplating such a project for a while now. I've mostly given up on knifemaking, but I want to keep my hand in. Mine will be of damascus, mostly because I don't make anything else. I havn't posted any pics here, but I've made over 1200 knives in the past 20 years. Add me to the list. Del www.ealyknives.com |

Honored to count you among us Del! I was secretly hoping that a challenge such as this would bring out some of the big guns.
Things are getting a bit more serious now. This is gonna have to be my best work for sure! Spread the word! This may the definative KITH of the Summer! A good effort here could do a great deal for the reputation of up-and-comers, and at least as much for makers who are already admired for their inovation and the quality of their work. I wouldn't want to miss this one!

The bar has been raised.I'm going for what I would want in harms way.I lean more toward the traditional,Full guard bowie style, maybe stacked leather handle.I've had an idea for a while this is the perfect arena to do its debute.

I'm willing to bet that most of us have sketched out extreme duty knives on a napkin while chowing down on a Grand Slam breakfast, or while sitting in a waiting room while your car is being serviced, etc. We probably set them aside as being impractical or hard to sell.
Time to dig that idea back out and run with it!

Sorry Andrew, I don't check the forums on the weekends, too much to do. I was talking about a Loveless New York Special.
On the shipping issues, Canada, Australia and England, to name a couple I know of, have laws forbidding the importation of tacticals, daggers and other dangerous knives. Granted no one who has joined yet will have that issue. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can throw together Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |
