Question Bladeforums problem?

Anyone else having a problem with Bladeforums? Last 3-4 days, off and on, having trouble accessing the site . Is it just me (ie my ISP) or are others having trouble too?

Thanks

Bill

The problem is with Bladeforums, not us. I do not know what the problem is but they have been on and off several times in the last week or so.

Thanks for the info - pretty much what I figured!

I'm in Seattle, and I haven't been able to access the site in the last 2 - 3 days.

Same story from Massachusetts. Maybe it's a trend, Don Fogg's site was down recently too.

Re: Bladeforums

I'm one of those people connected through Verizon and thus am forever barred from Blade Forums.

Unfortunately, from what I have seen BF is basically too big for its pants. They have numerous search problems which the admins claim dont exist if you know how to search, but that doesnt address the fact that their search timeout or cache is not big enough to return results or parse through the results that default search options they offer return. In a forum where there are hundreds of thousand of posts, the search function is even more crucial and seems to be the least of their concerns. Its something that can and should be fixed but it appears that either there is a very limited technical team able to support it or it is not a concern...a big no no for a site that has paying subscriptions, imho. Its just a message board, after all. Our company parses out and mines search results from over 20 terabytes of text in less than half a second. Im not saying they should have a huge setup like that, but if the post count is too high for their software to handle, a pay supported site should make every attempt to upgrade or their service will just continue to degrade with time. The site has been up and down now for a week with no emails to the mailing lists or member profiles...

I like the atmosphere but from someone who works in a technical workspace, some of the problems they have should not be difficult to fix and have me scratching my head often. Simply saying "theres too many posts to search" is not an answer for me, at least. Thats like saying "Oh, your car makes an awful noise at above 35mph? Dont drive that fast, problem solved..."

Anyways...thats my mini rant...

I am new to this forum (and love it by the way) but I registered with BladeForums last year. I am glad I didn't upgrade to Gold. I few of us have kept in touch by email, but as far as I know there has been no word from BF as to why they are down.

I like this forum as a fledgling wanna-be knife maker hobbyist. Lots of helpful people here.

Doug,
I'm curious, why can't you connect to Bladeforums (when it's working) through Verizon? I use SBC and don't have any problem. -Chris

im with dave on this one, they have had problems for ages with their searches, and i suspect this recent spate of down time is probably related. Giving tips like dont search for common words is just rediculous, if you want to search for O1 steel, you cant! first because steel is too commoon and second because 01 is too short to be recognised. theres no reason to have so many posts if you cant find what your looking for, maybe they need to move a whole bunch to an archive or something

I agree with Mr. Schott as well. I really like the site, but they exhibit very bad behavior for a site with paid subscriptions and all the issues are easily solved.

Personally, I'm very happy with the site. However, these days they are obviously struggling technically.
