Chute knife?

Will someone kindly define a 'chute knife'. I have seen a few with that lable and all were very different.

BTW, I learned skydiving a few years ago and never heard of one. So, I pretty sure that's not it.

Andy

Yes Andy that is it. A pattern developed to cut the cords on a parachute should one get hung up in a tree or wires. There are a few different styles based on patterns developed during wartime.
Here is a pic of the kind that is safest to use for the modern skydiver. I had always wondered how safe it was to fall fall with a fixed blade in your hand after you cut the ropes.

Here is a pic of the Camillus chute knife. Neat little auto with a folding hook. Been around since WWII.

If you wanna dive with style you could always break the bank and get a Loveless chute.

Or for some good reading on the subject from our own Steve Johnson, who makes the chute knife a piece of art, see this thread here.

What a wonderfully complete and well illustrated answer to my question. Thank you!

I guess I should design a chute knife now to add to the growing list of blades I want to make. It would seem that there are no strict design guidelines to follow in regard to features. That it will cut paracord would seem to be suficient.

BTW, how do you get the image to appear in the post. I can only get it to show as a link?

Andy

A pic must be hosted on the web. All the pics above were copied from websites. I right clicked on the pic, clicked on properties, higlighted the http and copied. Then I clicked the image box and pasted it in the space provided.
Most of the "free"pic hosting sites will let you link to them and let you email pics. I assume they want you to pay to host your pics so you can post them where you want.

Recently, I started useing the free space provided by my internet service provider to host my pics, which happens to be Comcast. I just went to their home page and followed directions to host pics. Seems to be working for me.
