Trail knife No. 2

After receiving nice comments about the "Dragonfly" trail knife I decided try another nature themed knife.

It has a 4" forged/carved, clay harden blade with a 5 1/2" intergral (?) steel/blackwood handle. About 9 1/2 inches overall with a max thickness of 7/16" at its head, it feels pretty slippery in your hand but in a good way.

Its called "Squid" !

BTW: If you were wondering Squid's do have 10 legs, they also have the biggest eyes (10 inches in diameter, they use their eyes for hunting). This one is more of a Humboldt squid (weighing several hundred pounds) instead of a giant squid which has 10 arms with 2 of them being for snatching fish. They are incredibly fast and actually have thousands of teeth (they have teeth in their suckers!)

anyway... thought I'd share

Rik

Fantastic! In every sense.

A buddy of mine is kind of a squid nut, so I've sent him your picture. He needs this or one like it!

It's nice to see your stuff once in a while.

Thumbs up

I really like this knife Rik. Interestingly, just last night there was a National Geographic special on Octopusi. Same family as the squid I think. Those things are smart! Thanks for showing us the knife. I envy the lucky owner.

Did you make a sheath for it?

Thats a cool knife! Wonder how you'd carry it? That would be neat to show off!
How did you get the squid into the design? Carve it?

Rik-

It took me a good while to get your "Dragonfly" knife out of my head, it was fantastc...

Now you've gone and done it again!

I love this one...every bit as nice as the Dragonfly. (Blackwood handle is too cool).

This nature theme is inspired...Very clever and wonderfully executed.

Yeah Baby!

BTW- What's the squid's backside look like?

I'm kind of surprised by the fact that I find this knife to be very attractive. I generally prefer more classic knife designs, but this one and the "Dragonfly" trail knife you did earlier are absolutely outstanding.

Squids butt

Thanx everyone for the encouragement!

HA! squids butt!

Well, that's great question! I've had a couple people ask me about its backside.

I actually stopped and paused about that when I was carving it up. I decided to just use only 2 eyes on only one side. The backside is shape with the same kind of head design as the front but without the eyes.

It might be hard to tell from the photo but the squids surface is textured, I thought the contrast between the high polished and texture worked.

I have an idea for a sheath but thought a stand might be better, not sure how to finish it off. I did make it only have a 400 grit finish so a person could bring the finish back fairly easy when the scuff it up.

BTW: Squids can move there eyes from the side of their head to the front giving them stereoptic vision when hunting.
