I'm looking for a reputable gold plater.
Any suggestions? |

I think I remember from an earlier topic that Ron Nott has a good contact, maybe he'll chime in here.

I'm supposed to get a commission to engrave the tailpiece of an antique guitar that is getting restored. The customer wants it gold plated when done..........It looks to be a decent size--4X8 inches(?) and looks to be made of brass.

Brian, if you need I could do that for you... Just shoot me an email and I will give you details and such.
All I would require for payment is to be able to take a rubbing of the engraving for my files while it was here for payment. Alan Folts (Still learning engraving) alanfolts@hotmail.com |

Tailpiece
I know where Gibson has theirs plated up in Nashville if you need that info let me know. I just did one a couple of months ago from a mandolin.
Looks like a great deal Alan mentioned though. This is just in case someone else may need the info or if it don't work out with Alan for some reason. __________________ "Tell about things just as they was, they don't need no excuse, Don't touch 'em up like the poets does, 'til they're all too fine for use."--James Whitcomb Riley |

speaking of gold plating, what is the difference in sending a piece out to be plated by a company OR plating it yourself with one of those plating kits???

You can plate yourself with a very simple set up... a 12 volt battery (I use an old motorcycle battery,) with one end going to a clip attached to your piece, the other end going to a pair of spring-closed tweezers with a cotton ball in them and a $20-$40 bottle of pen plating solution from Rio.

Thanks for all the info.......I just received the piece this week and I'm not sure when it'll get in the vise.
My work load got backed up when I had this massive episode with kidney stones. One on each side....I had two surgical proceedures, spent 6 days in the hospital, and a week to recover. OUCH! |

That doesn't sound like much fun! Glad to hear you are on the mend. Hope to see you in Reno. Best wishes, John. |

John,
Thanks for the "Get Well". I'm doing much better these days. Unfortunately, I won't make Reno this year. Two weeks at the Grand Masters(which was well worth it) and the recent illness tapped me out financially. I just do not have the $$$$ this time around. Brian |
