Tapering Tangs
Does anyone use a surface grinder to taper tangs? I'm trying to find out different techniques for holding a profiled blank and getting the taper angles set. A compound-angle magnetic sine chuck is just a bit too much money for something I can do on the belt and disc, but I'm curious how trhis could be held. Thanks.

You could fashion a 17deg., and a 34deg., metal wedge. Just put the lessor one under the knife for the first side. Use the 34 deg., for the other. I am assuming that you already have a magnetic chuck for your surface grinder.

Shims under the far side of the mag chuck is the easiest way.
The degree might depend on the length of the handle and the amount of taper desired. |
