S-guard Bowie 3 of 4
Here's the third part of the order I'm working on. I'm slow =P
Blade : Cable with Hamon. Length - 6" Fittings : 416 Stainless S guard and spacer. Handle : I believe it's a maple burl, stabilized bought from Ray Kirk. Small stainless pin. Length from fittings to butt : 4 1/2" Length Overall : 10 1/2" This was another fun one to make. Technically it's my second S guard, but first where I really knew what I was doing. Customer requested a knife that had a real pretty wood handle and a big guard. When I asked what he meant by big he referred to a previous one he'd bought. He'd referred to that previous S guard, which was actually a bit big. So this is what I came up with. Handle actually ended up a little more narrow than previously intended from trying to get it sanded jsut right. Although once I got it shaped nicely, being smaller, it seemed to fit real well. When I went to pin it, found that all I really had was 1/8" since that's what I'd just bought. I didn't want a big pin to detract from the handle, so looked around, and finally found some 1/16" stainless rod in the hobby metal section at ACE, also got some brass int he same size. Could probably have gone without the pin, but I felt it needed one just for extra security. Blade was etched to primarily bring out the hamon, the patterning is a bit subtle. Questions and comments are welcome as always. |

Edgar, Very well done, nice proportions, beautiful wood, great satin finish. I like the light etch on the blade as well. Is that a ferrule or a spacer there? Also, a good source for stainless , bronze, or steel pin stock is the local welding store. 1/16",1/8", and larger sizes in brazing rod, or TIG rod of steel, S.S., and even in some bronzes.

Hrm, might have to ask my friend up the road about that then as he's a welder. Err...well the one buying this knife actually.
It's a spacer behind the guard. I'd like to attempt a ferrule at some point, it'd be a good exercise in learning how to solder haha. I would like to find some pin rod in bronze, so I'll have to ask about that. |
