Carburizing iron
Hey everybody,
Had another successful smelt on sunday and plan to do another big one this coming weekend at a friends' hammerin. Brings me to ask: How long should I leave a 1/4" rod in a packed bed of charcoal at 2300 to 2400f to get about 1% carbon? The reason I ask is that we got a really nice bloom that was basically mild steel and by the time I get done consolidating it, I don't think it'll have much in it at all. I'd like to make some blister steel for the edge. Thanks all, Jesse |

Thanks, Mark.
I was thinking that we could carbrurize it while we were welding and that would take less time. I know that it happens way faster at those temps, I just wish I knew by how much! |
