Stabilized and dyed zebra bone.
The zebra bone and one knife it is going on. The bone is big enough for two handles so the $22 price is a real bargain. Will have to put brass plates on the hilts as even though it has been stabilized if dropped on cement it will still chip as the hard bone doesn't accept the resins, only the marrow. Don't ask how I found that out.

Went to Tennessee this week and met Robby Bowman from F&F. Great guy to
talk to and watched him teach a class.
Also got to go to the Smoky Mountain Knife Works Shop. Two floors of everything
that slices and stabs. So lucky, my boys and I got out of there with $$ in the pocket.
Got started on my dagger.

This week I assembled a 3D printer that came with 123 pages of assembly instructions. The blue shamrock thing is a test piece that they provide the code for printing. The little blue robot I printed because I had some plastic left.
After that, I assembled a laser engraver that came with no instructions whatsoever. No software either, had to scrounge around the net to get a clue. But, it got done and the truck picture was the first thing I printed from the stock pictures in the software I found. Note the hole burned in the card stock. My table also has a burned spot - I would not want to be on the wrong side of that laser!
The plastic block is a linen phenolic similar to Micarta. I burned my name and call sign into it and it burned deep ....

Very cool Ray!!!....what type of media does it use just a plastic? or can you put other stuff in it....I ask because one of my friends...he doesn't have one but a friend of his does. what he does is come up with a design something like a butt cap or a guard.....or even you know on a katana the habaki sepa (the 3 pieces that go up at the front guard) he came up with a design that had all 3 of those pieces in one. They print these in a wax material and put it in a bucket of sand and pour in molten brass or bronze and the molten metal melts the wax but takes its place.....let it cool and you have the piece in brass bonze what ever....it does come out with a light texture from the sand and you can just barely see the lines where the 3d printer piled up layers....I have sand blasted a few of these parts for him before and after sand blasting to get rid of that little bit of "texture" it comes out beautifully.....I thought about getting a 3d printer and trying this....but decided the cash could be better spent else where and that was when I decided to buy the press

I think they call that "lost wax casting". Anyway, the printer can use other materials including a kind of wood/acrylic mix and also carbon fiber. I personally have not seen a wax filament for these printers but wouldn't doubt its existence. There are industrial printers that could print your metal parts directly...
