Packing Iron for Knife sheaths

Packing Iron is a great reference for gun leather and Madison Grant's book, The Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch for pouches. Is there a similar book for period knife sheaths?

not really - John Baldwin's book on beaded sheaths has some good examples, but the price has become ridiculous, but you can usually get it through Inter Library loan.

Other than that several of the books by Prof Colin Taylor have some sheaths included, Alex Kozlov's book from Crazy Crow on sheaths includes some good images of originals, The Peacemakers by Rl Wilson has some good examples.

Much other info can be found online at various sites such as the sales and auction sites:
Sherwoods
Gary Hendrshott's various auction catalogs
Cowan's auction catalogs
Butterfields
Greg Martins
Museum sites are another source - her are just a a couple of them

FWIW - many of the pieces today being marketed by modern makers as frontier pieces are not based on original examples and are what is known as "fantasy" pieces amongst the cognoscenti - this is not a derogatory term just one that denotes a piece is based on the frontier "that might have been" not what actually was, much like the "world" created by Virgil Englund for his work.
Bottomline if you want to do documented reproductions then you will have to do the research of the originals and not copy or be inspired what other contemprary makers build without researching their work
