Do you want to see a tactical fixed blade?

I have been working on several fixed blade designs.

Can I get some input?

What would you like to see. Please vote with your post!

Neck knife?
bowie?
chute knife?
spear point?

Darrel,

I really like your kits, and from the list, would like to see you add a chute knife and a spear point to your fixed blade designs.

To your folders, I'd love to see you add that awesome stiletto you offer on your site, as well as a larger version of the GX6.

Also, a fixed, or folder, with a tanto blade would have excellent selling ability. Perhaps if you offered a version with partial serrations as an upgrade option?

Just my $.0258749345 (adjusted for inflation)

Mark and all ,
Do you feel the tactical fixed blade should have a bolster?
Or should we try to keep the price point low (full handles)

Hey Darrell,

I think the blade should be full slabs ( no bolsters ), spear point, fairly thick ( pryable sturdyness ), G10 slabs, brass thong hole with brass pins.

I like using brass for pins and thong holes because they can be blacked with Birchwood Casey Brass black.

I would love to see any style of knife with a tanto blade, folder and fixed. With fixed blades I would prefer no bolster. I'm not a fan of serrations, but a tanto with a hamon line would be sweeeeet. And, of course, the bigger the better.

Ok
Blade grinds on the chute knife?
Full double grind or single Bowie style?

Tanto.....geo or traditional.
I don't think we will be able to get a hamon line is stainless?
I'm sure I can do it for custom but for production???

Give me some blade lengths?

Chutes go from 3.5 - 7 inch blades

Tanto fixed blade tacticals go from 3.5 -7 or so?

Would it be good to make it so that you can have bolsters or a full slab handle. This would allow the knife to be made into an art style knife or a tactical?

3/16 stock is a good thickness....

I was thinking of aluminum tubing for the pins. Then you could use aluminum black to darken them.

Should the handle be skelotonized underneath the handles for weight consideration?

Darrel, if this is looking at the military then you will need a 7" and 5" limit. depending on what units there with these are the 2 most common length limits.

Full double seems to be most popular in commercial production knives. However, what are the rest of you seeing in custom work?

Go with the GEO over traditional. As for the hamon, it really depends on the steel used. You can get a decent visible hamon with ATS34 and AUS8 using Goddards Goop. I'm not sure if that's something that can be done in a production line or not. I suppose it would depend on the production facilities and the amount of units being produced.

I would suggest 4" as a good, commonly acceptable length for a fixed blade knife. However, some more popular tacticals being bought by servicemen today are leaning more towards the 5.5-6" length.

Although most modern tactial knives do not have traditional bolsters, I think that it would be a good selling point if they were offered as an optional add-in. IE like the spine or pocket clip are sold for some of the folders.

Yes, we need something that can be colored easily. I would suggest selling it with both pins and aluminum rivets. Drill out the body for both and let the builder decid which look to go with. I'm all for options ;-)

No. Not unless absolutely required. Skeletonizing the handle could limit the amount of customizing available for the scales. I bought a kit recently where the handle was over skeletonized and I couldn't undersize and shape the scales beacuse of this (it would have exposed some of the holes).

An overall single shape is a hard decision to make concerning tacticals,as people have different needs and tastes to cater to.I think you already have the design in the SG series, you could add a lug or two for a guard, and use thicker stock, maybe offer an extra 1-2" for length, and of course throw in the tanto for the eastern fans.

Hi Warth
The Sg is 3/16. I feel it is plenty thick for the blade length.

1/4 inch get pretty heavy for knives under 7". Do we need more thickness?

ok ,I have'nt seen the spec's on the SG's,I had thought they were 1/8" sorry for the missunderstanding,so the rest goes as stated, add some length, add a lugged guard and that basically covers the most popular shapes, anything else can be a modification done buy the purchaser. And for the people who want partially serrated, just offer a unshaprened one, they can hand file the step pattern they choose.

i vote for the double ground chute knife in the spirit of fully customizable as above:
-bolsters as option on fixed blade
-6 inch fixed blade, 4 inch folder
-definately do not need another sharpened pry bar
thanx

Darrel:

I'm not sure if Geo is the more "squared" look or not, but if it is, that's the one I'd like to see.

Blade length would be nice at 5.5"-6".

3/16" is plenty thick. I agree that we don't need a "sharpened pry bar".

I don't think skeletonizing is necessary, let the builder do that if they want to save weight. Bolsters as an option would be nice.

Hey, how about a 7" subhilt tanto/fighter???
