polish buffalo horn?
Just finished my first knife, and have a buffalo horn handle I bought at the PKA in Denver. How do you polish horn? thanks, Charlie

Pretty much the same as wood or micarta. Work your way up thru the grits (120-800), then a light buffing with scratchless compound brings it up to a high polish.

Charlie. Are you going to attach a photo of the knife when your finished.
I would be interested in seeing it. I have only tried working with buffalo horn once...I started to drill a hole through it for a hidden tang and the drill bit jammed (poor technique!)......It was jammed solid and I couldnt get it out. Havent used buffalo horn since, but I would like to. Cheers. Kevin.

Thanks for the help, have to get some compound yet, all that's left is polishing it.
Hi Brett - OK, I'll post a pic soon. I'll take one now and see about getting it up. Nice to hear from you. Trail Angel, I didn't have any problem drilling it, just had to be careful, and clamp it in a drill vise good. It's not too hard to work. Next time it should come out better. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...f/fd5185ac.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...c/fd5185a1.jpg 3 1/2" laminated Helle blade, brass guard brazed on and brass butt cap, buffalo horn handle (I threaded the end of the tang and put a nut on it then epoxyed it on), total length 7 5/8". I put three pins in the butt cap and when I ground it down I went too deep (3 times) and got into where the pins were brazed. The third time I just covered the hole I'd made by mixing epoxy and black paint then dropping it in the hole. Looks like an ebony stone in there, so I left it. For now anyhow. Haven't polished the horn yet. Pretty amatuerish, but ... hopefully the 1/4" 01 steel I'm making a bowie out of will come out better. Learned a lot just doing this. And from this forum. That looks excellent..love the handle,.... think I will have to try some more horn myself. Knife making becomes addictive...welcome to the club. Show us the bowie when you have finished. Regards. Kevin.
