No-The book 'Swords and Hilt Weapons' by Coe et al. was first published in Britain. My copy was published by Barnes and Nobel in 1993. (ISBN 1-56619-249-8).

I checked the picture references-the dagger is from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The thumb comes between the ears and the dagger is held in a way to stab downward.
I haven't seen any pics lately and don't have any info on techniques, but on the paintings as I remember them it was a lot ornamental and show among the rich, (sadly poor people couldn't afford paintings of themselves like that).

that's the arms and armour section of the met. on-line
didn't find the ear dagger there although there are some nice photos to look at
