historically inspired sword to show you

here's a picture of a damascus bladed Anthropomorphic hilted short sword based on a piece fromthe La Tene period in the British museum. I just finnished the scabbard, I made the sword itself last summer but held off on doing the scabbard till the sword sold as It's quite labour intensive.
historically scabbards from this period where metal but the wooden ones wound't likely survive for three thousand years so this is my interpritation of what a La Tene period wooden scabbard might have looked like.

That's beautiful work, Jake! Thanks for posting it. I really like the carving on the scabbard and I'd love to hear more about the inspiration behind those designs.

well the scabbard carving was really inspired by the stuff you see on lisnacrogher type Irish scabbards, but i had to change the style stitly to make it look good on wood, so I looked at a number of sources and i ended up basing the scabbard design on a piece of scrole work from the book of kells; it's interesting because the book of kells work represents the evolution of la tene period art into dark age irish knotwork wich married celtic as well as anglo saxon motifs. I'll post a picture of the original sword in the british museum, basically i alterred the original design in that i put la tene scrolle work on the belly ball of the hilt figure and i gave him a face with a tipical celtic mustache, the face was inspired by little styalized bronze heads that have survived from the same period.

Jake,

I love the carving you do on handles and sheaths...

What kind of wood is that?

Very nice sword as well...

Keep them coming!
