? for MH!

Mike, have recently run into problems with 440-C and ATS-34. Very unclean steels and deep black inclusions in the steel. I beleive I bougth the steel from Jantz Supply, but not for sure if it initially came from Admiral Steel. Do you have any reccomendations for getting better/ cleaner steels? As always your advice is appreciated.

Hi Ken, it sounds like the stuff coming out of Admiral. I would send the steel back to Jantz. You might mention that Admiral steel has been giving lots of knifemakers a quality problem, for the last few years. Maybe they will look to some quality steel manufacturers in the future, for their stock.
There are a couple of threads about this steel problem running now.

Fry Steel, in Santa Fe Springs has always had good 440C.

On the ATS, you might try using 154CM, from crucible. Call Bruce Di Vita, 1-800-365-1168. He seems to do all the knifemaker steel.

Shame about Admiral, but I've been seeing these complaints on every forum related to knifemaking. And getting worse by the day.

Edited to add; Here's a couple more places for ATS34 and 440C Ken. Good luck.
