Knife kit questions

Well, it seems to be the right time for me to venture into making folders. I have been making fixed blade knives for about five years now by doing my own forging, HT, handles and sheaths...but people keep asking when am I going to start doing folders.
Although I never started with any type of kit for fixed blades, I think that for starters at least, that maybe the kit path might be the way to go with folders...at least until I gain a working insight into how all the parts work together and get some idea as to where the sticking points might be.
So....here are my questions:
1.) I have looked at some of the available kits, and those I've looked at have all the milling, drilling and everything pretty much done. Is this true for all kits or are there different "levels" as to how much is already done for you. These kits seem to me to be more of a knife "assembly " kit...but perhaps there is some fine tuning to be done with these kits, and I could probably learn quite a bit from doing that.
2.) Are all the kit mfrs pretty much the same, or are some a cut above the others. I would like at least for the quality of the materials to be good, and the instructions to be clear. What are some of the better kit mfrs and where are they available from.
3.) If there are other alternative "paths" to getting started in making folders, I'm open to all suggestions.
4.) What might be among the better books and or videos currently available?
Any and all help is appreciated.

Hi Ed.

Ray and others will be along and can answer your question far better than I can, but I can get you started.

I would check these out. These are quality kit knives. I would start with something like this to learn on because its nice quality and dirt cheap.

Then go on to something like this.

These will be a different learning curse and possibly less headache than something like a slip joint.

I would stay away from ebay kits because some of them are already assembled and just require you to put a handle on them and that won't teach you much. Plus, the quality on some of the ones I bought were not great.

Folders are a whole new ball game and require more precise tolerances than fixed blades.

Also, since you already know how to grind, I'd check out Ray Rogers Linerlock tutorial. It's awesome and will help you understand how to design and put one together.

Also, come chat with us on Sunday night. Ray is there and can answer any question you throw at him.

One more thing. Cris Crawford has an awesome Slip Joint tutorial on his site. Plus, I believe he has a DVD for sale. Anyway, check it out and I hope I have helped. Good Luck!
