My 4th Knife - Christmas Gift
This is my fourth knife, a Christmas gift for a friend's son. Although it's pretty much the same knife as my #3, it represents a lot of firsts for me. It's my first 1000?C heat treatment in my homemade oven with a foil pouch and copper quench plates. My first attempt at a vine filework on the tang. It's a first for my stencils from Ernie and using my DIY etcher/marker, which seems to do the trick.
It's shaped from 5/32" 154CM stock at a hair over 8" long. The scales are book matched "Hades" maple pinned with 1/8" mosaics. It seemed to take an eternity to finish, but building all those tools along the way was an awesome experience! Dan __________________ "Don't believe everything you know." -- bumper sticker |

Good job, that sir is a beautiful knife. Is the maple stabilized or is it sealed with CA.

Thanks for your comments guys.
The maple was heat stabilized and has several coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil. I don't know the exact procedure used but the company claims to roast the wood at 365?F to collapse the cellular structure and enhance the figure. Google 'hades roasted maple'. It was hard and pretty much smelled like burnt wood when I was working it. The Tru-Oil really brings out the depth, but it's a little too shiny for my liking right now.
