I have a general question regarding KITHs, although I think I already know the answer:

Are these supposed to be a one-off design? I know the intention is to make a knife specifically for the KITH, but what happens if I make one, send it off, and really like the design and want to make a few more to sell? It's my design so there shouldn't be any issue with that, but it still seems like that's maybe taking away from the spirit of the KITH to me for some reason...

Can anyone give me their take on this?

I've made many knives of the design I will be submitting. Hondo, for really small blades like that, I personally drill out the tang as much as I can and taper it as well. Once you finish grinding the blade, the blade is much lighter. A knife of that size is almost impossible to make blade heavy, even if you tried.

No Ryan, the design isn't specifically for the KITH. Any knife design is fine as long as you use a known steel and limit the blade to 8" or less. You can make a common design like a 4" hunter, or some fantasy monstrosity if you want to and then copy it for sale as many times as you're able....

OK Thanks Eli I had not taken all the lost blade material into account. It will probably end up getting some more holes.

Well, on to plan C, I skipped A, ruined B and went to C on my list of plans.

I'm still not sure I will use this one for the KITH, I need some feedback.

I decided to go ahead with plan B style (which was San Mai, but my attempt to forge weld the billet failed) so I decided to forge the same knife in my head from 1084 Stock.

I had My wife and son take a few pics as I was working.

I should say at the start don't laugh too much at my current set up. Most of my equipment is in the tarped trailer in the pics. Most of my Power equipment is at a friends so I can at least use it, and my forge and crappy anvil are in a temporary spot in the driveway at the house we are renting as we build, I should have a new Shop (16X24) in the next few months. For now I'm just making due with what I can set up.

Also I have been teaching myself to forge, I don't know anyone who can show me so It is trial and error all the way.

starting the Handle.

working in the point, and doing a little distal taper. I had to stop at a certain point cause the blade was going to stretch past the 8 inch limit. I forged in the rise in the point and the recurve in the Blade.

Peening the sides that will remain "rough"

Roughed out and ready to grind

I got the Blade exactly as I had in my head, the handle, not so Much.

I don't know If I like the handle. ????

Half way thru grind

rough grind done.

Looking for some input on this one, does the handle look OK? I like the blade alot, its just sort of a Camp knife/chopper.

Its a Vulcan, After many weeks of searching it was the best I could find locally. I'm still looking for a larger anvil.

I was thinking it was a Vulcan cast anvil. It's gotta be at least 100 pounds isn't it? I have a couple 100lb anvils and would love a bigger one but they are tough to find in my neck of the woods.

Design

I sketched out the design for my entry. Not sure about the handle material yet. I hope to get it profiled out this weekend and will post as I go.
