Fixing Bolsters to liners?
What are some methods of attaching bolsters to liners for a small lockback or standard action pocket knife. other then using a welder or screws.
I used epoxy but was not sure how that will hold up and I was not thrilled with the look. the separation between the liner and bolster is visible. Is there a method for using silver solder to attach bolsters to liners. I'm using nickel silver and brass both for the liners and bolsters. |

TB, yes you can silver solder bolsters to the liners. Bob Ogg did it that way.
The key is to make sure both surfaces are clean and to tin both surfaces with a light coat of solder before joining them. Once they are tinned, just place the liner on top of something that can take the heat, like a fire brick, and set the bolster in place and apply the heat. When the metals are hot enough to melt the solder you will see it melt and flow together and then you just remove the heat and make sure things are aligned the way you want them to be. Apply light pressure and let them cool. Naturally you have to be careful when sanding to shape not get them hot or you can melt the solder and lose the joint. Also, to clean up the excess solder on the handle side of the bolster, have an acid brush handy and while the solder is still hot, brush the solder away and then take a section of 1/16" brass rod that's been sanded to a point and run it down the joint where the bolster meets the liner. This will remove most of the excess solder. Hopes this sets you in the right direction! |

Screws or pins are most often used.
Solder or spot weld works too. |

I user silver solder on all of my bolsters. See step 41 on page 8 of my slipjoint tutorial for instructions and photos.

I think there are a lot of makers that use JB Weld and Pins
