440c?
Just wondering as I have never used it but how does 440C witha proper heat treat compare to perhaps ATS-34 and such. I see it is wuite a bit cheaper from Mike Mossington than a number of other steels.

Personally, I like 440C much better than ATS-34. Part of the reason for that is that ATS-34 had some serious trouble some years back and I quit using it. I'm sure they must have fixed it but why should I care when there are so many better steels available today?
440C with a proper heat treatment makes a very fine knife. Most of the bad reputation it has comes from the fact that commercial knife outfits stamp some of their blades 440 and people assume that means 440C because they hear that a lot but that isn't so. Most of those knives are 440A and that isn't even close.
There are definitely higher performance stainless steels than 440C but none of them are as easy to heat treat if you really want that extra performance. Stainless steels are complex, there are usually several heat treat processes available for each one and the results from those different processes will vary widely. Most manufacturers choose the simple process of course which is why their blades of the same steel as ours won't necessarily compare since we can take the time to use a process that gives a better result ...

I prefer 440c to the ATS 34 just for finish and for ease of heat treat. Unless you have a need for the last 3% of performance, 440C works fine.

Ill double down to what Ray said... and in addition, like Steve said you can get a much better mirror polish from 440c than ats-34 (actually I believe 440c can produce one of the best mirror finishes out there).
In addition 440c is much easier to sharpen than say 154cm or sv35 and so on. So for the average user especially if actually used alot, 440c is a really really good choice.

Cool did not know that about 440c. Mike Mossington (my dealer) has kept trying to pudh me for 440c because its cheaper and I am just starting off into the world of knife making. I think I might buy a whole butt load of steel after christmas money. Thanks you all.
