Strange and interesting utility knife
Strange shape and look but feels pretty nice in the hand. What ya think?

It does look kind of odd at first glance, but it grows on you. I like it myself. It looks like it would be really comfortable to use and it would give you a very secure grip because of the shape. It's very 'hand friendly'. How far does the tang go into the handle? It looks like a good use for all those pesky antler tine ends that won't work for much else. I have a bunch of those sitting around waiting for projects to be thunk up for them. Looks good to me JD.

The oal is about 8", the tang runs into the antler about 2" and is serrated and epoxeied in (holds pretty darn good).

Hey JD, what was it originally? Looks like it started life as a wood chisel...Bud

Bud,
Right you are, I was given a bunch of unground wood chisel heads (no handles) by a freind, got em from some old warehouse. Thought they would make neat utility knives and they do (pretty sure they are 1084 but not positive). And one has produced what I hope to be a new thing in the way of hamon lines. I will be trying to reproduce this effect on the next one, i got two forged and ground this morning and will be heat treating them this evening. |

Hamon lines? You're using clay on them blades? Etch that one in acid and your eyes will pop out looking at what it does to it. I can't wait to see your results.

No clay, it was all in the quench, this one was chance but I think I can do it again. This one was etched and sanded twice, there are three distinct bands starting at the spine and after the last band there is that sort of firey patern that runs down towards the edge. There are also quite a few colors running through the whole thing as well. I've been talking to Tai a bit on this and while this is no where near the lines he has been getting in his bushes I am hoping to reproduce it as it appears quite unique (maybe I'll have to build me one of those wave quench tanks he's been experimenting with).
