Another maker with "pricing" difficulties

We have talked alot about the pricing of custom knives here on CKD.

I found this on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...238154730&rd=1

Obviously, he could use some advice from the Pro Makers on CKD.

For $6500 you think he would have contacted Coop to have a picture taken.

Note that he lists the fact that he has 180 hours in this knife. Im curious what he thinks his shop time is worth?

This indvidual is not even giving himself a fair chance at becoming a custom knife maker.

Then again, he only needs to sell one a month to make a pretty good living.

Hah! Thanks, Les, that's a good one! While the gentleman needs some good advice, I doubt he could actually 'use' any advice. Like my ol' grandaddy used to say, "Son, there ain't no cure for stupid."

I love eBay for the entertainment!

Sigh.... His marketing skills are as far off-kilter as his pricing. Since he HAD to use a plasma cutter to profile the blade, maybe this is his mid-tech less-expensive model...!

Thanks. I needed that.

Allow me to hijack this thread, while we're all chuckling. Speaking of pricing and eBay, here's an item on the other side of the scale... He HAS a clue about value, though..

eBay router table

Les,

Do you buy (and/or sell) knives on EBay?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I don't spend any time there. I'm not really shure who does or does not from our ranks.

Now that is about $8400 Australian

So let me think about this.

Buy some better tools, a flash grinder, and lots of materials

Say $3400

Trip to Melbourne/accomodation to see what Jason Cutter does and some other knifemakers down that way and learn something (two weeks)

Say $1500

Pay the father in law (ex cabinet maker) to make a nifty wooden case

Slabs of beer - say $100

So far we are comparing $8400 with $5000

But I am not sure if I would have the skills yet to make that knife.

Phone Jason and Commision him to make it

Lets just say I get a trip to Melbourne some accomodation and Jason to make it for $1400.

Now we are up to $6400

I know what I can do with the other $2000 - go to Melbourne to pick up the knife on the grand final weekend. Pay a scalper $2000 for some excellent tickets and Jason and I could watch the Brisbane Lions win their 4th Premiership in a row.

Looks like I won't be buying it.

Coop! That Ebay router table thing cracked me up. Funniest thing I've read in a while.
Here's another Ebay knife, which looks really nice to me (I'm not associated in any way). Only problem I have is with the "Engraved Bolsters"

That kid must be at least 14 years old, Les, judging by what I can see of his workmanship and design.

More power to him, somebody will probably buy it. That's what free enterprise is all about.

Coop, thanks a bunch for the belly laugh so early in the morning.

Coop, you beat me to it. I saw that router table last week. It kept me laughing for half an hour, then I printed it out and brought it home to my wife, who is a big ebay fan, and got the same results.

You notice he actually sold the thing? High bid was $26.22!

How True. Anybody else seen or heard about the guy who sold everything - and I mean everything including a half used tube of toothpaste, opened boxes of cereal, etc. - in his home on Ebay? He sold everything and that earned enough cash that he went around the world and visited each of the buyers and then wrote a money making book about the whole experience.

Alex - FYI - from several posts here on the forums it seems quite q few guys at least visit Ebay and I know there are some makers - J Loose - comes to mind who have sold or sell on Ebay. I'm not a fan but at times it's the only place I've found certain things. My only experience on selling was sour - tried selling some collectible books there one time and couldn't believe some of the uncalled for - telling us we were full of it for pricing the books the way we had them priced, etc. - email we received.

As for the router table - truth in advertising eh

Hey Chuck,

I haven't sold on E-bay for a few years now. When I was first starting out I did, and it was a good stepping stone, but I never got a fair price. It did function as an advertising medium, so I wouldn't tell new makers not to sell on E-bay, but I would tell them to stop as soon as they get jump-started. For the right maker, it can create a little "buzz," but the benefits stop after that.

On another note, I'm not sure, but I think I recognize the knife & maker that started this thread and.... I think it's quite possibly a *former* CKD member.
