I've heard it said that "Tai can sharpen a knife with a hammer," meaning he can forge a blade out that completely.

Forging to near completion, thus eliminating a good percentage of necessary stock reduction, while at the same time planishing to the point where the blade is virtually free of hammer marks and pits, is something that has always sort of been a Holy Grail for many smiths.

Tai is one of if not the best at that, it'd be a shame not to see him demo that.

Oh WOW I am not going to be able to make Bowie's hammer-in in Oct. and was feeling bad about that as the date approcahed. but was planning on making it to Harley's place in the spring, so this helps a lot. That's a long trip Tai for sure. An adventure!

Hammering the edge of a blade into a state of sharpness was a common way of sharpening old scythes up this way. This could be done in the field if the reaper brought a stump anvil with him. A special, smaller hammer was actually made for this also. I'd love to watch The Mighty Goo do this, because the last time I saw it done was my late Uncle Charles, whom I apprenticed under.
