Boy, are you guys in trouble, if you are waiting for me. Only thing I know is what I read in the papers, and I do not trust that. However it is refreshing to see someone actually doing business plans and setting goals. MS Bert Gaston and I tried to do a business demo at one of the hammer-ins. There were 62 attendees. Of that only one came to the business demo. That was Harvey Dean who is quite knowledgeable himself. Everyone else when asked later, said they already knew how to do that. Okaaaay. It has not been offered since. When the time premits I like to sit in on everyones biz demo. Never know when you pick up little tips of this and that or even big ones I just missed.

Jerry,

Did you write a book on this? If so, where is it sold?

Thumbs up

Yes, he did. Here's my quick review.

The "Handbook of Management and Organization for the Knifemaker", by Jerry Fisk is a 29 page powerhouse of information. No fluff in this one. Every sentence in the book is telling you something you need to know.

Here's what kind of stuff you'll find in this little jewel.
  • Full-Time vs. Part-time
  • Disadvantages of Full-Time
  • Disadvantages of Part-Time
  • Advantages of Full-Time
  • Advantages of Part-Time
  • Business Management
  • Goal Setting
  • Time Management
  • Record Keeping
  • Working Toward Better Quality
  • Ethics and Etiquette
  • Client Relationship
  • Maintaining a Good Relationship With Other Makers
  • Sales
  • Advertising
  • Brochures
  • Correspondence
  • Sales Records
  • Shipping
  • Show Sales
  • Methods To Get Your Work Published
  • Work Published
  • Finances
  • How to Price Your Work
  • Goal Setting Your Purchases
  • Bookkeeping
He also provides a sample spec sheet and a sample expense statement.

Jerry may have some available. I'll wait for him to chime in on that. You can also order them through the ABS website in the ABS Store section. Link - http://www.americanbladesmith.com/

Went to the ABS link and it does not have a good link to the book. Yo0u can see they offer it but when you click on it, there is nothing.

Terry, how much is the book? Hopefully Jerry will jump in and say he has a few. I looked on his site but it was not offered there.

Yes, I do have them. You can email or call. Just ask for Red since she handles the office stuff.

Question why why why why

Why is this allllll the way down here. It so happens that I was bored and thought... hmm.... wonder whats down here

Well as some of you know. My name is Michael and I'm working on making some home made equipment. I have been laid off since May. Boy....I tell yah..... when you are out of work for this long, you have this certain feeling of... hmmm... yup... worthlessness.

A few days ago, my wife gave me this, how to make money from your hobby, kinda book. I have not realy looked at knife making as a potential money making endevor, since I realy am just book smart at this point. Made some kits, but nothing unique yet. The book keeps telling you that you dont have to be perfect in what you want to do, just have a longing to do it. So, here I am looking at this possibility. I just went to the SBA office this morning and talked with someone. At first he said....You want to do what???? Then he got interested after the initial shock you know. We talked about all kinds of alternatives and strategies I need to look into. It was very positive. Although I am still kinda lost in figuring out the numbers and research that goes in a business plan. Oh and by the way I just ordered that book too!!! Looks incredible and I cant wait to get it

Michael

You won't be disapointed in Jerry's book. I read it and then read it again.

Plenty to learn in it.

Welcome aboard, Michael!

Wives are "funny" that way......
You're among like minds though.
We're all just muddling through it too.
"Keep your stick on the ice"...as we like to say here, in the northern hinterland!
