Talking The Hardness tester is a decent idea.

Like I said, if you mill with a drill press you just have to be light handed. I do it all the time and am careful as I don't have a cheap HF press, lol. I do have a precision cross slide table. If there is a college near you Dave, take your guards down there and ask the students to mill the slots for you. They would probably be happy too. I ask the kids down at the college for favors all the time. They also get a pizza or dinner in return though. The college doesn't have a machinist class, but has a blacksmithing class which I use from time to time.

Yeah, getting a hardness tester may be a good idea since you do your own HT especially with the stainless alloys. Look at Ebay and you might find a good deal for a used one. Just write down what you do and what you get and hardness isn't everything, but it is a major focal point. Don't give up your brass rod test either Dave, it's important too. Some knives you don't want to be too hard like a dagger I made, it needs flexibility, cause breaking on the rib bone of an attacking bear just won't do.LOL

Wished I lived close to you Dave as I could show you some good stuff and practices and you could let me use your Kiln, HaHaHa!

I am not sure about what classes the local colleges have (again I was stupid when I was younger never finished high school got my ged tho now I wished I had done it right the first time I am playing with the idea of going back for radiology or nursing idk just a thought tho) anyway yeh I think the hardness tested would be a better investment especially since I plan on learning and playing with different steels 1084 was first of corse but then 440c now I just started with cpm s35 vn planning on cpm 154 next. your right jim hardness aint the only thing but at least then I can learn exactly what HT produces what instead of a general idea with the brass rod test alone. I am a lil weary of buying a used one from ebay I don't like buying used stuff unless I can see it for my self before hand ....just me there is one on grizzly for around the same price as that mill that was on there that seems pretty good tho I am going to sleep on it tonight and decide tomorrow....well jim if your ever near ny your more than welcome to come by
