another scalpel
This is number three. Another decorative scalpel for a retiring surgeon, and the hospital has ordered two of them! This could be a growth industry...
This one is forged from 440C, with silicone bronze ferrule and pommel. The handle is carved from alabaster, the "guard" is turned from deer antler. A bit of file work on this one, too. Obviously some artistic ####### here; filework on a scalpel wouldn't do much for hygiene. Imagine having to dig out the crud from all the crevices... Hope you like it! That is absolutely gorgeous and unique. Isn't that a little thick for a scalpel though? I know it's mainly for looks, and I'm certainly not criticizing your amazing work. I'm just curious.

cbs, it's very thick by today's standards, and really only meant as a display piece. Any surgeon contemplating using this would get in trouble with the College...Might make a good deterrent for a hypochondriac...The original, a Roman scalpel I saw in a museum in Lugano came from Liguria, in the north-west of today's Italy. It was made from bronze and had to be thick in order not to bend or break. Bronze is very soft, and cannot be hardened. Today's technology allows for scalpel blades the thickness of a razor blade, and a multitude as tough and sharp as a Roman scalpel. Even during the middle ages surgeons' tools were more like conventional knives; just narrower, longer and with smaller blades, but with a fairly thick spine. Besides, I couldn't do much filework on a razor-thin scalpel blade...
