D-2 Modified, AIRDI150
HERE'S MY SECOND THREAD TO A d-2 QUESTION.
Forgot the caps lock. Idiot. Anyway. Has anyone worked with AIRDI-150. It is apparently called D-2S or D-2 Modified and is supposed to be the same as Crucible's D-2Modified. The local specialty steel supplier here in Australia has huge stacks of them and is happy to cut plates of it for me. They tell me that it is a "resulphurised version of the popular tool steel D-2 with HIGHER wear resistance and improved ease of use where extensive machining is encountered." All the other elements look the same as D-2. I'm not sure what that all means in the end, but I am interested in the wear resistance bit. I'm told the heat treating is the same and the hardness values are the same also. If so, this looks like good stuff. I'm told that sulphur is not a desireable element to have in steel, so how is resulphurised steel better ? Help anyone ? Thanks. __________________ JASON CUTTER BLADEART Jason Cutter @ Dr Kwong Yeang Knifemaker, Australia (Matthew 10.16) |

AIRDI 150 is Crucible's registered trademark for their own blend of AISI D2 Modified. They publish a typical analysis of:
Carbon 1.55% Manganese 0.35% Silicon 0.45% Chromium 11.50% Molybdenum 0.90% Vanadium 0.80% They list no sulfur. It may be present in neglible, trace amounts. I don't know, personally. Their processes are so exact, that there may not be any sulfur in it at all. Or, they may not disclose it for competitive reasons. In any case, I know a few makers who use AIRDI 150 to the exclusion of all other D-2 blends; for it's cleanliness and consistency, I am told. |

D-2 Modified
Thanks Sam,
The steel merchant stocks "stuff" from everywhere. They specifically label it D-2S and make a huge deal about the re-sulphurising process but also label it AIRDI 150. The marketing brochure doesn't mention Crucible anywhere. I noted on the AG Russell steel list that many manufacturers simply don't list silicon, sulphur and some others because they are supposed to be impurities. Maybe that makes a difference. Anyway, if its anywhere as good as D-2, it'll make good knives. Even better, its right there, in my backyard, and the dealer is keen. Offering to cut up plates of 5/32 to 3/16inch thick for me at no charge. Cheers. __________________ JASON CUTTER BLADEART Jason Cutter @ Dr Kwong Yeang Knifemaker, Australia (Matthew 10.16) |

You're welcome. I think you should go to www.crucible.com and have a look around for yourself.

Jason, try asking over at the kit knife forum. Darrel Ralph uses that D2 modified stuff. Or e-mail him direct.

D-2Modified
Thanks guys,
I'll have a look at the websites. I've had some trouble getting to crucible's website. Perhaps they've changed names ... I've now chanced across another detail I'd like to clarify. We've been talking about D-2Modified AIRDI150. What about D-2 STAINLESS. Aside from a mention a few years ago, I haven't heard much about it. Supposed to just have that extra chromium to make it actually stainless. Does REKAT (Round Eye Knife and Tool) make some knives from it ? In the end, may be little point in TALKING about the stuff. Should just get down and use it and see if I like it. Thanks again. __________________ JASON CUTTER BLADEART Jason Cutter @ Dr Kwong Yeang Knifemaker, Australia (Matthew 10.16) |
