stag handle
I 'm new. I need to know the best way to put a stag handle on a taperd tang blade. This is a basic kit about 20 years old from Norway. It has no instructions and i can only guess at what would be right. It also has a small piece of brass which I assume would be to make a spacer of some kind out of Huh ?

It's a little difficult to be sure since I can't see the parts but it sounds like one of two possibilities.
If there is a hole in the tang, then they probably want you to put a pin through the stag passing through the hole in the tang and out the other side of the stag to secure the handle. If there is no hole then they probably just expect you to fill the stag with epoxy and jam the blade in there. Either way, you would want to fill the hole in the stag with epoxy. The brass part could be a guard or ferrule. If it is a spacer the you would need to make a guard or ferrule. Basically, a book could be written answering that question. Fortunately for you, many have been. Check out the popular knifemaking books such as Goddard's 'The Wonder of Knifemaking' and the Barney/Loveless book 'How to Make Knives'. There are also tutorials on the CKD that would probably answer your question better than any written answer could. Just look at the top of this screen and press 'how-to's' .... |
