What's next after S30V?

Certainly s30v is the hot steel right now and by all reports lives up to the hype..

What new steels have been proposed or hinted at? Any other cast alloys (like stellite etc)

What other properties or improvements would you like to see.....

I know Crucible's next CPM will probably be a stampable version of S30V, downgraded to allow it to be die cut as a replacement for the infamous 420HC or 420-J2 and the like. That would upgrade the production knife market by a whole lot.

Their newest steel is CPM-1V, which is probably the toughest production steel ever made that can attain Rc59. It's not as wear resistant as 3V, but for really big blades, combat tools, and swords it just might be the best ever, bar none. It's tougher than S7 - jackhammer bits!

All that said, it's going to be tough to define a reasonable edged tool demand that can't be met by S30V, IMHO.

Jerry,

It sounds like you're going to CPM-1V for your long blades over CPM-3V. Are you planning to continue using 3V and if so, for what usage?

Having worked with 1V just a tiny bit, I don't think I want to make a career of it. It is not fun! I'll stick with 3V for most large blades and swords, and use 1V only if someone really really wants it. Also, I've yet to complete my first blade in it, so it's still an open question, but the numbers sure are impressive, and judging by how tough it is to work, I'd guess it's going to be tough in every other way as well.

Patience Grasshopper. Good things are cooking. Stellite and Talonite just might be going the way of the doodoo bird.

Ron, I'm really enjoying that mini aikuchi you made me. The quill menuki is great, especially after I told you it would be used for envelopes!

Is your comment about the "liquid steel" you've been working with?

"liquid steel"?

Never heard of it, don't know nothing about it, I think your making it all up!

Didn't do it, no one saw me do it, can't prove a thing.

I can not confirm nor deny the existance of any subject material refered to as liquid steel or any other similar name.

Sorry but NDAs suck.

I have said as much as I can without being sued.

At the very latest all will be made public by S.H.O.T. or by BAKCA at the earliest.
