What a long, cold, exhausting day. I'm stiff and sore but I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. I thoroughly enjoyed myself the whole time. Got to see people I already knew and got to make some new friends as well. I even got to forge up a good-sized billet of damascus steel that I brought home so I can make a few knives out of it.

I wasn't able to shoot pics of everything but I did shoot a bunch of the action shots.

This is gonna be pic heavy so bear with me. Gonna have to do this in multiple posts.

Our gracious host, Chris, and Phillip going over the day's game plan early in the morning.

The beginnings of a 15-layer (1084 and 15N20 steels) damascus billet. The pre-welded billet at the top is what Chris will be working on in following pics.

This guy was so pissed that he had fire shooting out of his ears.

No wonder he's pissed. He's got a giant Q-Tip shoved deep in his head.

Chris getting the billet up to forge-welding temp so he can fuse the 15 layers of steel into one solid billet of steel.

Dropping the hammer to fuse the billet. Flux was sprayed everywhere. I got hit right in the face. Didn't hurt me, though.

Brushing off the scale after the first weld. Yeah, she's solid.

Under the fullering dies of the power hammer to draw out the billet to the right size for twisting.

The Earth, she trembles.

After fullering, Chris puts the billet under the flattening dies of Isabella to flatten and square up the billet in preparation for twisting.

I ended up sitting the camera down so I could lend a hand. Even with 2 of us on it it's a serious workout. Doing it by yourself is very difficult.

Straightening the twisted bar by hand (hammer and anvil, actually)

Ready to get hammered into submission.

This is just 1/3 of the billet that Chris forged. This shot was done after surface grinding and a little etching to show the damascus pattern.

These next pics are of me at the forge. This was my 2nd time forging damascus on my own. I had a few mishaps with the rebar handle coming unattached to the 2300 degree billet but Chris got me back on track.

I may not be Chad Nichols but I do wear one of his t-shirts.

Brushing off scale in between heats. You gotta keep your billet clean or you'll end up with inclusions and your billet will not be as pretty as you need it to be.

Look at the determination on my face.
