About making a power hammer "hammer"
What type of steel would you guys recommend for making the hammer portion of a power hammer? D2?
And is it OK during the stock removal stage to get the steel hot, say from using an angle grinder to rough out the shape? |

D2 isn't really suitable .Many make hand or power hammers from 4140 or even 4340 .

I have to presume you are talking about the hammer itself and not the dies. The hammer itself can be made from A-36 if you are bolting dies to it. If you make a sow block (dovetailed die holder) on the end of the hammer to receive dies then I would use 4340 to make it.
