Question About making a power hammer "hammer"

What type of steel would you guys recommend for making the hammer portion of a power hammer? D2?
And is it OK during the stock removal stage to get the steel hot, say from using an angle grinder to rough out the shape?

D2 isn't really suitable .Many make hand or power hammers from 4140 or even 4340 .

I have to presume you are talking about the hammer itself and not the dies. The hammer itself can be made from A-36 if you are bolting dies to it. If you make a sow block (dovetailed die holder) on the end of the hammer to receive dies then I would use 4340 to make it.
