That one's particularly cute isn't it?
I've made a few Thor's hammers from wood, fine silver and steel. One day I'll make one I'm really happy with... Roger |

...And my own interpretation of one found in Iceland:
That mold up there is interesting, the one with the crosses & the hammers. Those Norsemen were either extremely tolerant, irreverant, or pragmatic. |

I saw a Thor's hammer once made of forge welded meteoritic iron, it was pretty cool but out of my price range (I think the asking price was $275). I made a tiny pattern welded one myself a couple years back but I'm not happy with the finish. Now that you all have inspired me I may have to work on it again and see how it turns out. I also saw a guy several years ago at a ren faire who was casting them in pewter with a little soapstone mold just like in the photos. He even melted the pewter over charcoal with a cute tiny bellows. Hey Jon, don't they have a lot of soapstone up your way? Any idea where the wood stove folks toss the pieces they can't use?

Hammer-in-the-hat might be fun!
I made a big damascus cross for someone once. A hammer would be cool. Meteorite sounds about right. Imagine *that* one coming down. There is old folklore that paleolithic arrowheads that Norsemen found were strikes from Thor's Hammer, or something like that. I have some soapstone from around here, but someone gave it to me, so I don't knwo where to find more. I've actually been meaning to make a jewelry scale forge a la Theophilus and do some soapstone castings... If I find a bunch more soapstone I'll post it here... I'll sell it for free but I'm not paying for shipping. |

the circles are made with a finish nail setter available from your local hardware store for about $2.50,i believe they come in 3 sizes now. the zigzag engraving was done with a #42 flat graver.
