If the seller is correct, then that is a very retro piece. It's listed as 17th century, but it more resembles some the 15th century ones I have seen, including those shown in Daggers and Fighting Knives of the Western World. The usual dirk (not dagger as listed) of the 17th century has a much more stylized handle. To the point were it no longer has a ballock handle.

However no matter what century it's a good piece of inspiration.

This is the first time I've seen the ballocks supported like this in a metal guard.

According to a research paper on the Mary Rose Web site, all the Ballock knives found on and around the ship showed signs of a metal plate nailed onto the handle at the base of the blade. Also 15th century examples in Dagger and Fighting Knives of the Western World, show these sort of ears as part of the handle. But in these photos, the ears appear to be part of the wooden handle. It's possible the the 17th century smith in recreating the style made the assumption that these were metal. Especially if he was working from earlier period wood cuts.

Or it's possible that when I looked at the 1922 photo in Dagger and Fighting Knives of the Western World, that I assumed the projecting ears were wood (sigh!). Turns out I'm wrong. Found one of the same pieces in my Wallace Collection catalog. It shows a 15th century Ballock dagger with the projecting guard, clearly made of metal.
