Rope cutting geometry
I am wanting to make my father knife for use that will be primarily cutting bailing string. He uses it tying up tomato plants and cuts quite a bit of twine and I would like to make him one that will do the job with as little effort as possibe. I plan on using CPM S-30V for the blade material but I am curious on what would be a good style blade.

Tim,
There is a miriad of blade styles that will do the job that you are after. I suggest that you ask your father what is his favorite. He is more likely to use one that fits his own tastes the best. Gary |

I think Gary's suggestion is a good one. Personally, I'd think a fine edged Wharncliff would work well for that purpose.

I think Wharncliff would be my choice for that function too.

Gary's suggestion is good if my father had a clue as to what a warncliffe was or any other style for that matter. We have our knives he as his garden.:-) I was leaning toward a Warncliffe myself but the only thing this knife will be doing is this job and I was wondering if there was a style that really excelled at cutting rope (twine)

This is may not fit what you're asking, but in my (very short) career running a machine that made cardboard boxes, we had to tie the boxes in bundles. To cut the twine, we wore a "ring knife". You wore it on your finger as a ring, and it had a hooked blade about 3/4 of an inch long. Worked great. Kinda Freddy Kruger. That makes me wonder if a small hawkbill blade might work well for cutting twine and pruning plants.

Actually you may have somethinng there as he would not have to reach for it each time. He grows around a thousand plants and the is a lot of cuttiig as they need tied up several times during the season and he is bad to drop and lose them, I have given him a knife very year for his birthday for this purpose and it seldom makes the next season.
