Question What kind of wood is this?

I found some small wood slabs in the store today. Some of them looked quite nice, so I bought a handful to cut up and use for scales for full tang blades, or straight razor handles. I have no idea what kind of wood it is, though, and this is where I need help. Can anyone identify the wood in question?

Oh, and if this thread fits better in another part of the forums, moderators are welcome to move it to the "proper" place.

Cheers!

/Nicholas

The top one looks a little like walnut but who knows for sure you can see a lot of wood samples at this link. Allso check the rest of the site for others.
I hope this will help some. Good luck!

I agree with Bob on the top one, but the bottom looks like teak. What kind of store did you get it at? That might give us a clue.

It was a clothing store which has a selection of cheap things (like dollar store things, everything from cosmetics to DIY tools and everything for a dollar a piece). It's possible that they are made from wood scraps, and are made from different kinds of wood.

Looking at the pics at the Gilmer Wood site, I'd say they look like they might be striped ebony...

Bottom kind of looks like cedar to me. How heavy are the bottom pieces?

I almost picked up a cheese platter the other day at the thrift store--some kind of Phillipino wood with heavy burl. But I already have lots of wood that I haven't gotten around to using yet. . .

my guesses....

top: either crotch black walnut, or claro walnut

bottom: aromatic cedar if light and fragrant or western red cedar, tulipwood if dense and hard

If it feels light for it's size, and maybe came from Asia, I'd guess the upper right one was monkey pod.
Take care, Craig

Having looked closer at the grain of the wood slabs, I would guess they are all made of the same wood, but maybe from different parts of the tree? The slabs are roughly 150x230 millimeters and roughly 10 millimeters thick, and weigh between 175 and 210 grams. The wood has a very light smell, but I can't place it. It's possible it has been oiled and that it's the oil which smells.

To my eyes, the wood resembles these woods on the Gilmer Wood site: Striped ebony (only not as dark and not as reddish), Goncalo Alves (only a little darker than the photo there), Monkey Pod (only stronger colors and perhaps denser grain), Pau Ferro (but maybe with more stippled look).

Hay Nicholas,,Cedar slabs are often sold in clothing stores for folks to put in their chests or closets to ward off moths.

Interesting fact there, Skip. These were found next to packs of plastic drinking straws, microwavable food containers, pencils, screw####### and other assorted items for a dollar each, so I don't think they were sold for that specific purpose. They can, of course, still be made of cedar, but they don't look like any of the kinds of cedar on the Gilmer Wood site.

Interesting. I haven't been able to find any really good pictures of sheesham wood online, so I can't see if the grain looks the same as on the slabs I have, but if they are indeed made out of sheesham, they are probably going to work pretty well for the purpose I have in mind.
