S30V?

Hi Ya'll,

I'm wondering where I could get a couple of pieces of S30V. I need enough for a folder or two. What does this steel cost and what is the heat treat method?

Thanks,

Peter Atwood

Craig, it's Ruhl not Reno; you don't have to worry.

THE MAN for anything Crucible Steel makes is Bruce Di Vita at the Crucuble Service Center in Arlington, TX.

CL,

Janet Ruhl is my wife and she has one of the biggest boards on EZ board so I don't want to change her settings every time I post here. She's a computer pioneer and the Queen of the Lady Nerds.

Thanks Jerry. I'll give him a call on Monday and see if I can get a small bar of it. I'm curious to try one of these high end steels after using only O1, 440C and ATS34. I guess it's one for Paul Bos to heat treat though......

You had mentioned that it's a bear to get the scratches out. How would it do in a hand rubbed finish of about 320? Also, I'm doing flat grinds right now so would that make it easier to finish?

My approach to brushed finishes is to get out all the scratches down to the very worn 600 grit level before beginning to apply a brushed finish. With the new Norax's on S30V I started with the #75 (~220 grit), then the #45 (320-400 grit), then a used 600 grit Schroeder, and finally the #16 Norax (~1000 grit), then brushed it out with 600 grit greaseless compound on a loose buff.

I really really like these new belts. They run cool, cut well, don't seem to load up, and wear well too. The Norax's took atleast 30-40% off my best finishing time with S30V. Now I'm almost willing to take orders for the stuff.

S30V?

Jerry, you mean orders like mine?

This S30V seems to be the bomb. From all I've read and heard firsthand from various makers, I dont see how it gets any better. I am looking forward to using a knife made from S30V.

Jerry, last time I ordered from Bruce at CPM I mentioned your name as his biggest promoter. He chuckled and said you send him a lot of people. Probably time to get some promo steel soon.

Peter:
I Have made 5 knives with the new S30V and it is an
outstanding steel, However the heat treating spec's
that CPM sends with it is not worth 2cents.

It took me about 2 weeks to come up with a good
workable formula. Heat treating 6 test pcs.

The best that i came up with is 1950 for 30min and
let air cool.

Temper 1 time@ 675deg
then sub zero quench for 6hrs.

then 2 more tempers @ 675deg

Test out to be 58RC

tempers any lower than 675 the steel will be
60+ rc. and a nightmare to work.

and you can put a mirror finish on.
anything lower hand finish wiith 320

Hope this helps.

Re: Mirror finish

Sam:
You can put a mirror finish on it IF the
heat is as listed.

However you cannot use a BUFFING WHEEL
it has to be done with a 2000+ grit sanding belt

I will try to get a picture out as soon as I can
when I finish the Knife.

The reason you have problems with SV30
is that it is a pure S/Steel and cannot be approched
like ATS34 / 440c.

Once you get the feel of how it works, you will have an
outstanding knife, I have several liner locks that some of
my clients have ordered from me and have requested the
SV30 steel.

Sam, I'm located in Ft.Worth if your near by, I can show you
how to work it.

Alas, I'm in Ohio. But I think a few people are going to be excited to hear about this.

Very interesting Blademan. But I thought that the whole point of this stuff was to have a higher rockwell and still be extremely strong with excellent edge holding. There was also supposed to be the non edge chipping benefit too if I remember correctly. Aren't you losing some of that if you bring it down in rockwell points? Forgive me if I'm showing my ignorance on the subject but hopefully someone will explain further.

Thanks,

Peter
