pig bone?
Howdy all,
I was asked to build a knife for a friend of a friend. He asked me if I could make the handle out of pig bone. I said I'd have to check. I know handles are made from antler, cow bone, giraffe bone, camel bone, and walrus tusk, but never heard of pig bone being used. Anyone ever try it? If so, where does one find it? Thanks, Gandalf23 |

I would imagine that not all bone would be suitable for every knife handle, but any bone large enough would probably do fine for any knife it would fit. All I'm saying is, if it's big enough and solid enough then it should work fine. Maybe pig bone looks good and maybe it doesn't. I never saw anyone use it before.
Pigs are large animals so the bones could be large enough for most any knife purpose. Depending on where you live you might get some from a farmer or you might have to go to a butcher shop. Some makers get bones from pet shops but, as far as I know, those are always cow bones. If you get a bone from the butcher shop you'll need a lot of drying time. No matter how you get the bone I'd send it out to be stabilized. One last thing: I didn't check to see if they had pig bones but you could look at www.boneroom.com |

Ask Larry Harley. Maybe he could hook you up with a wild boar femer. It would be cooler to say it was made from wild boar than domestic swine.
One of his Battle Bowies with a big ol'boar leg bone knuckle on the butt would be cool. http://www.lonesomepineknives.com/hunt.htm __________________ "Many are chosen, but few are Pict" "The doer alone, learneth" NT Neo-Devo |
