Sixth Annual Bowie Knife & Scagel Symposium

The Sixth Annual Bowie Knife & Scagel Symposium, Friday, September 5, 2003 will be held in conjunction with The SouthEastern Custom Knife Show, Winston-Salem, NC (Sept. 6-7) at the Benton Convention Center Ballroom, 301 W. 5th St., Winston-Salem.

This is an opportunity for knifemakers, collectors, and enthusiasts to learn more about the classic knives that continue to fascinate and inspire us, so many years after their heyday.

This year's speakers include:

Dr. James Lucie from Fruitport, MI
Dr. James L. Batson from Madison, AL
Mark D. Zalesky from Knoxville, TN


3:00 PM 9/5/03 ...... Seminars begin:

Mark Zalesky, editor of Knife World, will discuss the work of Samuel Bell, the dirk knife maker of Texas and Tennessee and recent inductee into the ABS Hall of Fame. This year he will explore Bell's knives and their ornamentation, as well as the maker's probable sources of inspiration.

Jim Batson, master bladesmith and an authority on early bowies and the Bowie family, will interactively discuss early bowie knives with the group, covering syles like "coffins"and "dog-bones," and makers such as Schively, Searles, and Bell. Bring a notebook, and your questions! (approx. 4:30 PM)

At approx. 6:00 PM we will break for sandwiches (provided), before proceeding with the events...

Jim Lucie, accomplished bladesmith and the leading authority on the life and work of W.W. Scagel, will offer his insights into the fascinating man who has inspired a generation of knifemakers with his artistic vision of the working knife. (approx. 6:30 PM)

8:00 PM (approx.) ....... Informal Knife Show and Roundtable Discussion: Featuring a number of examples of authentic antique Bowies and Scagel knives.

Here's your chance to talk with the speakers one on one, and to study firsthand some of the knives talked about during the course of the events (as well as a lot of knives not talked about!) We encourage everyone to bring their knives for comments, questions, and discussion both as a group and individually. Here's your opportunity to find out about that knife you found in the attic, or hear what a master craftsman thinks about your
latest creation.
