welding

Guys;
When you have yours layers for damascus up to welding temp. how much pressure does it take to weld the them together? I want to make a press but don't know how many tons I need to get the job done correctly. Will a 20 ton hydraulic jack like a truck jack be good? How about a vertical wood splitter? Any thoughts on this? What does some of you use? Thanks

20 tons would be plenty, I think you could get away with half that. Lacking the space and motivation to do damascus often I usually us my anvil and a 4lb hammer and flatter.
The wood splitter would make the job much easier since there is no pump handle to fight with (look into an air/hydraulic jack, they're nifty).
