Mickley and Mason - One called 'Number 1'
Once in a while a knife earns a name while it is being made. This knife is one of a two piece set and this knife is called simply 'Number 1', the other half of this set is in Joe Mason's possession and is called 'The Bastard' - for a reason.
4 1/4" blade of RWL-34 with an 8" hollow grind that is highly mirrored. The OAL is just at 9". The deep relief engraving with gold inlay is done by my friend Joe Mason who's work simply keeps getting better. The handle is Mammoth ivory. The custom sheath is carved Mexican loop style to vaguely resemble the engraving. Heat treated by Paul Bos the mirror finish in the hollows is liquid mercury finish, the flats are satin scratched near mirror for some contrast. Thanks for having a look.... |

That's really outstanding guys. I'm very proud to be the owner of an early set from Tracy/Joe/Sandy, and will keep it till my time is up(and then will probably take it with me). You guys keep it up, you've developed a style that is easily recognizable, something that only a very few of the best makers have done. Looking forward to seeing your next venture.

Thank you fellas, I appreciate it. They were fun to make. It's been great to work with Joe on some of these projects. A true southern gentleman....
David J: A liquid mecury finish is a way to describe a final finish that is highly mirrored. RWL-34 is particle metal foundried and takes a very high polish with some effort. Most mirror finishes have very (very) fine scratches that show up in strong light. RWL-34 does also but the scratches are so small they are very hard to see with the naked eye, if at all. The resulting finish resembles the reflection of pool of mercury. How it's done is simple really, take twice as long grinding with progressively smaller grit belts as you would normally - all the way down to x5 micron using Norax belts. The final stage is a quick buff using green chrome compound. |

Welcome back from the links, Tracy! Hello, Joe! That is BEAUTIFUL. I am so happy to see the collaboration continues. I'll run over to Joe's page in the hopes of a pic or two of the bastard.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the comments. No, have not done anything to the Bastard yet. Been real busy engraving for others and just have not had time. It is a beauty. Look forward to working on it. Plan to have it ready for the Atlanta show. Joe |
