Justice

Could you please elaborate on your advice. I am confused as to what you are saying. I could be because I an dense or that it 7 am and I am already at work.

I am getting ready to finish some non-knife related woodwork (fire place mantle) and I wanted to put on a high polish finish

Thanks

Sorry about the confusion, I meant to post that in doublearrows thread and must have clicked new thread by accident. You were telling him how to achieve a good finish and I could not follow what yuo were trying to say.

Thanks,

Bill

ah i see. i figured you where talking about doublearrows thread. but i was realy just giving him a way to decipher between the 2000 grit finnish and the 8000 grit finnish. by sanding 2 pieces of the same metal. one with a 2000 girt finnish and the other with a 8000 grit finnish. then place them side by side and you should be able to see a difference.
but to get a good finnish i do what most do start with the lowest grit and work your way up throgh to the highest grit( 150,220,280,320,400,600,1000,1200,1500,2000,2500,4 000,6000,8000
now i dont use nearly that many grits.cuz i dont have them but i would if i did i go from 150 to about 1500 grit then wet sand from 600 up to 1500 again. going in the same direction untill i get to the next grit then i change direction and do so on every grit change so you sand out the lines from the previous lower grit and as the others stated taking the work in to a differnt room or lighting after you have sanded will reveal many things you did not see befor. or just puting the work down and coming back later to look it over will help you see anything you might have missed.
some use a polishing compound with a buffing wheel after all that but i have yet to do so.

im no expert but i hope that helps.im sure others will chime in
